History of Byzantion Fest

12 Years of Journey: The Story of Our Festival
Twelve years ago, this journey began as a dream and gradually transformed into a sense of community and cultural heritage. Our festival became a space where art and music came together, new friendships blossomed, and inspiration was ignited for subcultural movements in Turkey while providing independent artists the opportunity to share their voices. This event, where alternative thought and creativity came together, has over time become not just a festival but also a symbol of a lifestyle.
Initially born from the efforts of a small group of people, this event was organized with great passion despite facing challenges during its first year. The energy of participants, the impact of performances on stage, and the collective atmosphere we created motivated us to strive for better each year. Over time, the festival grew and diversified through the participation of music groups, artists, and independent creative collectives from different cities and countries.
Today, our festival is not just a meeting point; it has become a platform where ideas are shared, inspiration is born, and unique voices resonate. Featuring performances by dozens of artists, various exhibitions, and displays by independent designers, the festival offers participants both opportunities for enjoyment and learning. Over the course of 12 years, it has managed to touch the lives of hundreds of people.
This 12-year journey stands as one of the finest examples of collective effort, solidarity, and creative power. With each passing year, our excitement to continue this cultural heritage grows. Our goal is to write new stories, inspire more people, and pass on this cultural legacy to future generations. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to our festival!
Key Milestones and Contributions of Our Festival
The first edition of Byzantion Fest took place in Kadıköy and has since hosted over 200 local and international music groups and artists. In its third year, the festival underwent a significant transformation by adopting Burgazada Cennet Bahçesi as its main location. This enchanting venue hosted its first event, bringing together over 3,000 participants and marking an unforgettable beginning.
Byzantion Fest has proven itself as a cultural platform that extends beyond music alone. Under the name Depths of Byzantion, two fanzines were published, each consisting of 100 pages, expanding the festival’s contributions to creative production. Furthermore, Karışık Kaset, an illustration exhibition, and Kadrajdaki Ritimler, a photography exhibition, were curated and included in the festival program, incorporating visual arts into the event.
One of the festival’s greatest achievements has been its support for independent producers. To date, over 100 independent brands and producers have been provided the opportunity to open stands at the festival. These stands offered a platform for local makers to exhibit and sell their creations, ensuring that their voices and artistry were amplified.
Byzantion Fest has grown into more than just a festival. It has become a space for independent artists, designers, and producers—a place for solidarity, collaboration, and creative energy. This ecosystem celebrates both the power of art and cultural cooperation, bringing creative expression to life while fostering meaningful connections.
